Lawyers, Prophet Arraigned For Stealing Gold Necklace, And Others


Two lawyers and a prophet were among five persons arraigned at a Magistrate’s Court in Port Harcourt on four-counts of stealing and willful damage of property.
The accused persons were identified as Martha Agwasim (58), Basil Agwasim (66), Prophet Solomon Monday, Samuel Wilson and Matthias Udo.

They were accused of stealing a gold necklace worth N1.75m, a wristwatch valued at N1.5m and some home appliances worth N12.5m.
According to a copy of the charge sheet no. PMC/398C/2015, the alleged stolen property belongs to one Alhaji Kehinde Olaniregun.
The alleged crimes punishable under the laws of Rivers State, were committed on Egbede Street, Diobu, in Port Harcourt.
The charge read, “That you, Martha Agwasim, Basil Agwasim, Prophet Solomon Monday, Samuel Wilson and Mathias Udo, on October 10, 2014, on Egbede Street, Diobu, Port Harcourt, conspired with others now at large to commit felony to wit: stealing, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516A (a) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. II Law of Rivers State.
“That you, in the aforesaid magisterial district, did steal gold necklace valued at N1,750,000,00; wristwatch valued at N1,500,000,00; LG TV, generator, Panasonic radio, electric iron, two computer laptops, refrigerator, standing fans, four pillows, total value N12,550,000,00, property of one Kehinde Olaniregun.
“That you did steal N1.8m cash, property of one Alhaji Kehinde Olaniregun, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol II, Law of Rivers State.
“That you did wilfully and unlawfully damage one China door valued at N20,000, property of one Kehinde Olaniregun, and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol II, Law of Rivers State 1999.”
However, the name of the first accused, Martha, was withdrawn due to ill health. She was also absent in court as a result of ill health.
The four other accused persons pleaded not guilty to the charges, even as the Magistrate, D.N. Wanjoku granted them bail on the condition that the accused would provide one surety each in the sum of N1m.
The magistrate adjourned the matter till August 6, 2015 for hearing.
