Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, over the weekend traveled to South Africa to commence lobby for the candidacy of Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Akinwumi Adesina, as President of the African Development Bank (AfDB).
A statement issued by the Atiku Media Office in Abuja said that Atiku trip was geared towards shoring up the much-needed support for the Nigerian candidate.
“His Excellency former Vice President Atiku Abubakar met President Zuma in the company of Dr Akinwumi Adesina during which the directive of President-elect General Muhammadu Buhari was conveyed to Zuma.
“The issue of South Africa and the Southern African region support for Nigeria’s candidate was exhaustively discussed and well appreciated,” the statement said.
President-elect Buhari’s backing of Adesina’s candidacy, came as a shock to Nigerians who felt Buhari was far too kind and forgiving to back somebody who once tweeted hateful comments about him in the weeks leading up to the presidential election.
Adesina, who was a strong supporter of Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, quickly deleted his tweets once news filtered in that Buhari was considering him for the AfDB position.

Great move by our President Elect GMB.
He knows that its only the Great Turaki Adamawa that can deliver the Presidency of the AFDB to Nigeria through his age long friendship with President Zuma and many other African leaders.
I just hope Adesina remains a Minister on his return considering the era of Sack that we are in now.
#Change.
