Police parade 40 suspected armed robbers in Abuja


The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Wednesday (today) paraded 40 suspects over allegation of committing crimes ranging from armed robbery, car snatching, ‘one chance’ and theft.


Parading the suspects at the offices of the Abuja Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) , the FCT Commissioner of Police (CP) Wilson Inalegwu said a total of 16 stolen cars were recovered as a result of the arrest made within the last two days. CP Inalegwu said Police from Utako and Gwarinpa on Monday conducted raid in Jabi village, after receiving a report of robbery incident in Gwarinpa.

 According to the police boss, a group of 20 suspects were arrested with the help of the victims I-phone signal, their location was identified and many stolen items recovered. Some of the items recovered include one toy gun, two gulf cars, assorted electronic devices, laptops and phones. 

Among the suspects paraded were two men said to operate between Owerri, Port Harcourt and Abuja. They snatch vehicles from one city and relocate them to another. Six vehicles were recovered from them while five others sold separately in Abuja and Port Harcourt are yet to be recovered. 

A gang of four with one female member were also paraded for operating a ‘one chance’ syndicate around Utako. They were said to have been arrested by SARS operatives while trying to lure a female victim into their waiting painted taxi. Also paraded were two prostitutes turned thieves who relocated to Abuja from Anambra and Imo states. 

They were arrested after allegedly stealing N40,000 from a woman’s bag in Karimo market. They were caught in the act, when one removed the money and passed it to the other. Two other women arrested on Tuesday along Idu industrial area over suspicion of belonging to a ‘one chance’ gang were paraded along with the other suspects.

The police say efforts are ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects of the gang. Also two men said to belong to a gang of armed robbers operating from the Abuja International Airport as a taxi service were arrested on Tuesday, after they robbed a Senegalese woman who boarded their taxi from the Airport. 

According to CP Inlegwu, the taxi driver suddenly stopped at a dark spot between the airport and town, his accomplices come out from a nearby bush and forced the woman to relinquish her valuables. He added that a police patrol team arrested the suspects when the Senegalese woman raised an alarm after succeeding in removing the car keys from the ignition.
