Foreign students will be banned from working in Britain and kicked out when their courses finish under a new crackdown on illegal immigration.

The tough action has been ordered by ministers to stop colleges being used as a back door to the jobs market.

Thousands of “students” have got into the UK by enrolling for classes they never attend, before working illegally and claiming benefits.

But non-EU students will be stripped of the right to work or apply for a visa extension when their course is over.

Up to 11,000 people a year are using these student visas, which are the most common route in for illegal immigrants.

Home Secretary Theresa May barred 870 private colleges from taking foreign students since 2010, but was blocked from going further by the Lib Dems.

Apart from losing the right to work, the length of stay will be cut to two years and students will have to leave Britain before applying for work visas.

They will also have to be registered with a university before they can extend their studies.

Immigration Minister James Brokenshire said it was “part of our plan to control immigration for the benefit of Britain”.

New rules will be put before Parliament this week, with work rights restricted from next month and other changes scheduled for autumn.

They will not apply to universities, which already have stricter vetting procedures.

ALMOST half of 1.1million new jobs expected to be created by 2020 will go to foreign workers, it was claimed last night.

Documents from the independent Office for Budget Responsibility predict 470,000 immigrants will fill the predicted new roles.

Migration Watch chairman Lord Green said: “Growing the economy through mass immigration is of little benefit to existing residents of the UK.”
