Capital One Cup semi-final first leg, Anfield – Liverpool (Sterling 59′) Chelsea (Hazard pen. 19′)
Chelsea claimed a slight advantage over Liverpool in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final with a 1-1 draw.
Liverpool were quick off the mark from the whistle, looking to recreate their blitzkrieg starts to matches from their memorable 2013/14 season, but Chelsea managed to hang on against Raheem Sterling‘s pace.
Chelsea scored against the run of play when Eden Hazard was tripped in the box by Emre Can, and he confidently converted. Steven Gerrard went close a minute before when Thibaut Courtois tipped over a long-range shot.
In the second half, Sterling grabbed a brilliant equaliser as he slalomed through the Chelsea defence and fired past Courtois, and almost took the lead when Gerrard hit the post.
Liverpool went close again as they looked for more goals, but Courtois’ excellent saves kept the scores level ahead of the second leg
