A 30-year-old teacher, Terhemba Hon, was on Tuesday arraigned in Makurdi, Benue State, for allegedly fingering his 11-year-old female student.
Hon, a staff member of Ikyor Victory College, Iber in Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State, was charged before a Makurdi Magistrates' Court.
He is facing a charge of gross indecency punishable under Section 286 of the Penal Code Laws of Benue, 2004.
The prosecutor, Inspector Terzungwe Kajo, told the court that the case was transferred to the State CID, Makurdi, from the Divisional Police Headquarters at Tse-Agberagba, via a letter, for discreet investigation.
According to the letter, the father of the victim, Ageva Gbaden, had first reported the matter at the Tse-Agberagba Police Station on February 9.
The complainant told the police that the accused had called his daughter, a JSS 1 student, into the staff room, locked the door and forcefully fingered her against her will.
However, when the case came up for mention, the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him.
Thereafter, the prosecution prayed the court for an adjournment, requesting more time to make further investigation into the matter.
The Magistrate, Mrs Lillian Tsumba, granted bail to the accused in the sum of N50,000 and adjourned the matter till July 16 for further mention.
