Rodriguez Pips Van Persie To Goal Of The Year Award

Colombia’s World Cup star James Rodriguez won the award for the Fifa goal of the year, with his wondrous strike against Uruguay in last year’s Fifa World Cup in Brazil.

The 23-year old’s goal was picked ahead of Irishwoman Stephanie Roche, who scored a stunning goal in a Bus Eireann Women’s National League match. In third place was Robin Vanpersie audacious header against Spain at the World Cup.
Had Roche won, she would have been the first female winner of the Puskas Award.
In a quite nervy encounter that was watched by 91 people, Houche, 26, received possession with her back to goal. She subsequently took a light touch on her right foot, raised the ball over a defender’s header with her left foot, and then miraculously volleyed home from outside the box.
Rodriguez scored a similar effort in Brazil. The Real Madrid man controlled and volleyed from 25 yards in a last-16 tie. He is also finished the tournament as the top scorer.
Manchester United’s striker Robin Vanpersie would be unhappy he didn’t finish in first place. He was at the end of a Daley Blind’s weighted pass, and complimented it with a 15-yard header that looped over a hapless Iker Casillas.
