Air Safety Threatened, As €64m Lagos Airport Radar Packs Up

  • Air controllers to shut airspace on Monday

Air traffic controllers under the aegis of National Association of Air Traffic Controllers (NATCA) has raised an alarm with air safety in the country as they disclosed that the newly installed 64 million Euros radar at the Lagos airport has collapsed.

The body under aegis of the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) in a statement signed by NATCA President, Victor Eyaru and General Secretary, Olawode Banji said, the radar popularly referred to Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON) in Lagos had witnessed frequent total collapse in recent times.

According to the duo: “In the past four days, it has collapsed totally twice. When any of the equipment fails; the workloads of air traffic controllers and pilots increase and increasing the levels of fatigue thereby threatening air safety.”

Consequently, the controllers have threatened to shut down the airspace Monday next week, describing the action of NAMA as insensitivity to the professional and welfare matters affecting air traffic controllers in the country.
