As the race for who would emerge the governorship flagbearer on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Delta state hots up, moves by the incumbent State Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan, to woo a major tribe in the state, the Urhobo people through its umbrella body, the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), to support his choice successor, Sir Tony Obuh, in the 2015, elections may have hit the rock.
New Telegraph gathered that the purported move made by the governor with the invitation of the UPU President General Chief Joe Omene to a discussion on the issue last weekend was snubbed as, Omene, delegated the Secretary-General of the union to lead the tribe’s representatives to the meeting instead.
It was further learnt that at the close door meeting, Uduaghan promise to the UPU that Obuh will only do one term as governor if the UPU gives its support was turn down, as the leader of the union’s representatives told the Governor that the UPU would only entertain discussion on Uvweiamuge, who is the tribe’s candidate.
It will be recalled, that the UPU at a press conference on November 4, 2014 at the Urhobo Cultural Centre, Okere-Urhobo, reiterated its earlier position taken March 2014 by the Urhobo nation, affirming that all registered political parties, including the PDP, banking on the majority Urhobo votes in 2015 must pick their governorship flag bearers from the Urhobo nation.
