President Goodluck Jonathan has relieved General Martin Luther Agwai of his appointment as chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P).
The sack of the former Chief of Defence Staff is coming few days after he spoke at the 78th birthday celebration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, where he said change of leadership in the country was inevitable and that the country’s leaders must accept it and move with it.
General Agwai had also cautioned the military to stay out of partisan politics if they should win the war against Boko Haram insurgency and other security challenges.
President Jonathan in a statement yesterday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, however said the decision was in furtherance of his efforts to continuously re-energise and reposition agencies of the Federal Government for optimal service delivery.
The president has therefore approved the appointment of Mr. Ishaya Dare Akau as the new Chairman of SURE-P. Akau, whose appointment takes immediate effect, hails from Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State and holds Bachelor’s Degrees in Arts and Law.
According to Abati, Akau comes to the job with years of experience as a high-level administrator in the nation’s public service. “His record of service includes tenures as Chairman of the Kaduna State Universal Education Board and Chairman of the National Assembly Service Commission,” he said. President Jonathan also thanked the General Agwai for his service to the nation and wishes him well in his future endeavours.
