February Polls Still Under Threat

The plot to postpone the February general elections may not have been over as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, will today meet with the national commissioners, chairmen and secretaries of all the registered political parties in the country today.

In spite of the assurances by the commission that it is prepared for the February 14 date, the Council of State is divided as the security agencies are asking for an extension to enable them clear the Boko Haram insurgents to ensure adequate security during the elections.
According to a press statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu,  “On Thursday, February 5, 2015, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, was invited to brief the National Council of States (NCS) on the preparedness of INEC to conduct the 2015 general elections. He made a presentation titled ‘Preparations for the 2015 General Elections: Progress Report.’ The National Security Adviser (NSA) and Armed Services Chiefs also briefed the council on the current security situation.
