Governor Godswill Akpabio
Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State yesterday distanced himself from the fears and speculations that the forthcoming general elections in the country might split the nation into two instead of unifying it.
The Governor said this during the State Government organised annual inter-denominational governance service held at the Ibom Hall green field ground.
“The next election will be about love, togetherness. It is not going to be about religion. Today, Nigerians are worried about the future of the country particularly with the up-coming election. I beg to disagree that the next election may divide the country into two between Muslims and Christians.
“The next election will unify Nigeria; the next election will bring brotherhood and brotherliness. God didn’t make mistake in creating over 280 tribes and put all together as one country”, he said.
Buttressing his position, Governor Akpabio noted that even the opposition party, All Progressive Congress (APC) has a Muslim and Christian just as the ruling Political Party, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has a Christian as a President and Muslim as Vice President.
“Therefore if we recognised the plurality of Nigeria, we wouldn’t allow religion to tear us apart. The solution for the peace we are yeaning in Nigeria is the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in office”, he stated.
