ASUU Passes Vote Of No Confidence On LASU VC

Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Akure chapter, yesterday passed a vote of no confidence on the Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University, LASU, Professor John Obafunwa, saying the VC has been violating the institution’s laws, disrupting and desecrating the academic culture for which the institution is known.

Coordinator of the union, Akure chapter, and chairman of ASUU, Federal University of Technology Akure, FUTA branch, Dr. Alex Odiyi, who stated this at a press conference in Akure, said the action of the institution’s VC is fuelling crisis in the school and rubbishing the efforts of the state government in ensuring a conducive learning atmosphere.

The union alleged that the Obafunwa-led administration is encouraging parallel senate by using illegal structure to articulate obnoxious policies, irregular appointment of Head of Departments and wasteful spending of public funds to celebrate his 1095 days in office, among other allegations.

Odiyi said, “These ugly development among others, perpetrated by the vice chancellor, are in reality acts of witch-hunting, which demean the exalted position of the vice chancellor. Also, they are capable of igniting industrial unrest within the university.

“Obafunwa has presented himself as one who lacks the qualities required to provide leadership and ensure an enduring academic culture that befits a university. Worse still, he no longer enjoys the trust and cooperation of both academic and non-academics,” the union said.

Odiyi explained that the national body of the union has explored all available means to put an end to the crisis which emanated from the reduction of the school’s tuition, which was championed by some members of ASUU in the school.
The Akure Chapter of the union, however, called on the Lagos and other stakeholders of LASU to call the institution’s VC to order and let peace reign in the school.

The union said the call became imperative to check the activities of VC, saying; “What affects the eye affects the nose, we have the right to correct injustices within our institutions and we want these issues resolved before the matter gets out of hand and extend to other universities.”

The ASUU chapter also called on Visitor to the university to constitute a visitation panel to investigate the running of affairs of the university, saying that, “this will in no measure unravel the state of affairs in the university and also provide an opportunity for lasting solution to the problems that exist in the university.”
