Senate refuses to extend emergency rule in #BokoHaram affected areas

The request made by President Goodluck Jonathan for an extension in the emergency rule imposed on three states of the federation – Adamawa, Borno and Yobe – has been declined by the Senate. The State of Emergency was months ago imposed on the said states to bring the violent insurgency under control.

The Senate was yesterday divided on taking a decision to extend State of Emergency – a situation which necessitated today’s sitting on the same matter.

The National Defence Council (NDC) had, on Monday, met to review the situation in the North east and decided to extend the emergency rule by another six months.
According to a statement released by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, the lower chamber will also meet tomorrow to deliberate on the issue.
Pres. Jonathan had yesterday had a closed-door meeting with Senate President, David Mark and Emeka Ihedioha allegedly to deliberate on how to go about the said extension.
Observers are waiting to see the resolution of the House of Representatives as regards this issue. The Boko Haram Islamic sect  have killed thousands of citizens in Nigeria North east in a bid to extend their brand of Sharia rule all over the country.
