The time is ticking for the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, whose term in office expires this month.

In a few weeks’ time, except the President, General Muhammadu Buhari decides otherwise, Prof. Attahiru Jega will quit as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Jega, former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), who was also former Vice Chancellor of Bayero University, Kano, was appointed as INEC Chairman in June 2010 for a five-year term.

He is, however, eligible for re-appointment for another term. Though, neither the outgoing president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, nor the man who succeeds him, General Buhari has made pronouncement concerning Jega’s tenure, the INEC Chairman, reportedly said he would decline any plan to extend his stay in the commission.
“Whatever assignment one will do for five years – just like this difficult one — to me if one is able to successfully accomplish the task, someone else should be given the opportunity. Because for me I am not interested and if I am requested to serve again, I will not do it, by God’s grace,” He reportedly told British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa service shortly after the March 28 presidential election.
Jega has made history as the only Chairman of the nation’s electoral umpire since independence who had conducted two general elections in succession. His first assignment was in 2011.
