Minna Jailbreak: 64 Inmates Recaptured, 211 Still At Large

MINNA— About 64 of the 275 inmates, who escaped when gunmen attack the Minna Medium Security Prison, have been captured just as the Comptroller General of Prisons, Dr. Peter Ekpendo, said that the attack had no link with the Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

About 211 prisoners are still at large, while a search team has been sent out to different parts of the state to ensure that the escaped prisoners were captured.

The Comptroller General, who visited the Minna Medium Prison, yesterday, described the incident as unfortunate, embarrassing and completely unacceptable, stressing that any officer found culpable will face the full wrath of the law.

According to him, “pre-report shows that there is no evidence to link Boko Haram to the prison break incident of Saturday.”

Speaking to newsmen after inspecting the prison yards, Ekpendo said he had ordered the immediate transfer 55 officers from the state and zonal headquarters offices to Minna Medium Security Prison and Minna Old Prison to beef up the security.

He assured that the security challenges facing the prisons will be tackled head-on, adding: “Justice must be done and sanity must be restored. The security of the prisons and all prisons is paramount.”
On Saturday, gunmen attacked the Minna Medium Security Prisons as 275 inmates escaped.
The gunmen broke into the armoury and carted away weapons and bullet proof vests.
