EPL: ‘Boxer’ Rooney Helps United Bounce Back To Beat Spurs 3-0

  • As Everton beat 10-man Newcastle; Chelsea-Saints draw
Manchester United bounced back from last week’s FA Cup exit by demolishing top four-chasing rivals Tottenham.
Marouane Fellaini drilled home United’s opener before Michael Carrick nodded in after Spurs failed to clear a corner.

Wayne Rooney netted after a Nabil Bentaleb error, then celebrated like a boxer in response to newspaper reports he was knocked out sparring at home.
Spurs mustered just one shot on target as they missed the chance to go level on points with the Red Devils.
And at Goodison Park, Everton beat 10-man Newcastle to ease their relegation fears with a first league home win in three months.
James McCarthy scored after Romelu Lukaku’s lay-off but Tim Krul was at fault after misjudging the tame shot.
Newcastle striker Yoan Gouffran tripped Aaron Lennon in the penalty area with Lukaku scoring from the spot.
Three minutes later Fabricio Coloccini saw red after he chopped Lennon down with Ross Barkley adding a third in stoppage time.
Meanwhile, Chelsea’s charge towards the Premier League title was held up by Southampton who earned a deserved point in a superb contest at Stamford Bridge.
Diego Costa gave Chelsea the lead with a header before Dusan Tasic equalised from the spot after Nemanja Matic had fouled forward Sadio Mane.
Southampton keeper Fraser Forster made a handful of great saves to deny Oscar, Eden Hazard and Loic Remy.
The Blues have a six-point lead over Manchester City with a game in hand, reports the BBC.
EPL RESULTS
Everton 3 – 0 Newcastle
Man Utd 3 – 0 Tottenham
Chelsea 1 – 1 Southampton
