PDP Grants Special Waiver to Kalu

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) begins the screening of all senatorial and House of Representatives aspirants on Wednesday and Thursday, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party may have granted a waiver to the former Governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, to enable him contest the Abia north senatorial election.

The PDP NWC also sacked the executive committees of the party in Adamawa and Ebonyi States, urging members of the party to disregard the published lists of delegates in the two states.

This was disclosed on Tuesday to journalists by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, who said the publication of lists of delegates was not authorised.

Also, the PDP NWC yesterday directed that a special committee should be set up to screen Kalu in Abuja to avoid a possible violence between Orji Kalu supoorters and the supporters of the incumbent governor, Theodore Orji.

According to a source who spoke with journalists, the current screening committee could screen the former governor in Abuja or another committee would be set up to screen him.

A source at the meeting said the NWC observed that since the former governor has joined PDP in January 12, 2011 and has applied for waiver, it will amount to injustice if he is denied the waiver.

“Some waivers have been granted to returnees even to people who applied much later; why should his own be different?” the source argued.
He disclosed that the PDP wants to ensure a united  party in the state and wants its members to work as a team.

According to the source, in a bid to find amicable solution to the problem, the state governor, Theodore Orji was given two senatorial slots as well as all House of Assembly members.

On why a preferential treatment was given to the former governor, he said: “The NWC has powers to form a special committee. There is no problem about that. Why the idea came up was to avoid any likely breach of peace between the supporters of the governor and Kalu.”
